Calling all moms! Imagine a place where you mingle with other moms without any interruptions. There would be guest speakers, stimulating conversations, discussion groups, crafts and always something good to eat. Too good to be true? Well, there is such a place, and it's right here at South Hills Church Community. The group is called MOPS, which stands for Mothers of Preschoolers.

Today more than 110,000 moms attend 4,000 MOPS meetings throughout the United States and 29 other countries. MOPS of South Hills meets the third Monday of the month at 6:30 PM. While the moms meet, the children are entertained.

So, if you have a little one 5 or younger and are looking for supportive friends, meaningful fellowship and good food, try a MOPS meeting. It just may change your life.

  • 6:30pm-8:30pm at South Hills Church
  • Childcare is provided
  • $5 meeting fee each month, one time $20 fee to MOPS International (Scholarships are available)

This year's theme is: "THE HOME FACTOR, BEGIN HERE, GO THERE."  Each meeting will focus on a specific room in the house so we can learn from each another the ways in which we function in our homes and how that can prepare us and our children for the outside world. New and returning Moms are invited to come and eat, make new friends, listen to a speaker, gain helpful insight, do fun crafts, and so much more.

Being a foster parent brings many challenges and new needs into a family. Foster Connect will provide support to Christian foster families, enabling them to do their ministry as foster parents even better. This includes practical support, but also emotional and spiritual support. Foster Connect is a ministry of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Las Vegas.  Our mission as Foster Connect is to connect volunteers to opportunities in the foster care world, connect foster families to the resources that they need, and to connect foster foster families to other foster families, all in the community of Las Vegas.

Ray and Clare Biggerstaff are faithful members of South Hills Church Community and we are blessed to honor their dedication as leaders of  Foster Connect with our prayers, volunteer projects and events, as well as financial assitance.  Please visit their web-site for more information.

Upcoming Events

PRAISE AND FELLOWSHIP HIKE - Saturday, April 19th

We will hike, pray, have lunch and clean up litter along the way.  Meet in the church parking lot at 9 am.  We will carpool/caravan to Lake Mead Railroad tunnel trail.  Bring a picnic lunch to eat on the beach where we'll also do a cleanup.

SHADE TREE SHELTER WORK DAY - Saturday, May 31st

For this event we are partnering with the South Reach ministry.  This shelter helps battered women and children and has recently added a section to help the animals in these abusive homes so it is a good fit for both ministries.  We will collect donations for both sections of the shelter before we go.  We'll deliver the donations and stay for a work to help with whatever the shelter needs.

SHAMAR CAMPING TRIP - Friday-Saturday June, 27th-28th at Mt. Charleston

We're reserving a group campsite on the mountain!  Plan to camp, eat and fellowship around the campfire, worship, and hike if you want the next day.

For more information on these events or to sign up, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

The focus of Shamar ministry is to celebrate God as an amazing Creator and reach people for Christ who love creation but do not know God as creator and Lord.  We can serve and honor God by being good stewards of what He has made.  The Bible is clear about God's care for his creation and all creation sings His praises (Psalm 145:9, Psalm 148).  Everything in all creation belongs to the Lord (Psalm 95:4-5).  To serve the Lord by being good stewards of His creation, we have created Shamar, a creation stewardship ministry.  Shamar is a Hebrew word that means "to keep, guard, observe, sustain, give heed".  For example, this ministry maintains recycling programs at the church, organizes clean-up events in the community and surrounding natural areas, shares God's love with others who love His creation but do not know Him, conducts educational programs about God's creation, partners with local animals rescues, and so much more.  If God has gifted you with a passion for nature, animals. and people we would love for your to be a part of this ministry.  If you are interested in joining our group, please email Sarah Pryor.  We are very excited about what God is doing through this ministry at South Hills!

Our Purposes:

  • To reach people who love God's creation but do not know Him as creator and Lord.
  • To serve and honor God by caring for His creation.
  • To follow commands found in God's word to care for His creation and be kind towards the animals.
  • To worship God through His creation.
  • To preserve what God has made so that it may continue to sing His praises, reveal His glory to all, and sustain life for people and animals.

καιρός PDF Print E-mail

Kairos is the creative leadership team at South Hills Church Community.

Kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word meaning the "right or opportune moment"; a time in which something special happens.

In rhetoric kairos is "a passing instant when an opening appears which must be driven through with force if success is to be achieved."

In the New Testament kairos means "the appointed time in the purpose of God", the time when God acts (e.g. Mark 1.15, the kairos is fulfilled).

What:
Kairos will be comprised of four creative leadership teams.  Worship, Visual Arts, Relational, and Publicity.  These teams will provide an outlet for creative gifts latent in the membership of our church.  It is an opportunity to organize, equip, motivate, and deploy a small army of volunteers and staff into service and ministry at South Hills.  Teams will get a preview of where we are going as a church in the months to come, and will play a key role in planning and implementing our church services and creative ministries.

Who:
Kairos is open to high school upperclassmen and older.  We encourage applicants to consider Kairos their primary ministry in the church.  This is something for anyone who wants to be more than a spectator in our church, and who is not already serving regularly with another ministry.  We have some very competent and creative people pitching in, but little support, encouragement, and communication.  Kairos seeks to nurture, expand, and grow our creative ministries.

Why:
To bring excellence and creativity to our church communications and media.  The Kairos, that passing instant that we come together as a body for a church service is an opportunity for us to draw near to Christ, to each other, and to the community at large.  Our creative leadership team will focus intently on specific aspects of the church experience and environment, sharing the burden and blessing of serving the Church in our worship services.

When:
The plan is to meet biweekly for prayer, discipleship, relationship/team building, and strategy.  As we map out our teaching schedule and themes for 2008, we’re looking for 20 to 40 individuals who want to dream, plan, and carry out the ministry of our worship services and communications.  One of our first tasks as a team will be to get the worship center ready for Christmas.

Teams:
Worship – This team will be made up of our musicians and audio console operators.  This is the only team that will require an in-person audition.  Team members will focus on bringing sonic excellence to our services.

Visual Arts / Publicity
This team is painted with a broad brush, but team members should expect to contribute to the aesthetic quality of our worship services and communications.  The Visual Arts / Publicity team will produce artwork for our projected imagery, work on our church website, our bulletins and forthcoming newsletter, and the beautification and theme of the worship center and gathering room.  This group will also produce videos and script creative monologues to motivate attendance at events and ministries.  This group may also do some event planning.

Relational
Greeters, Hosts, Nametaggers, and Followup people.  This team may be encouraged to assist with our growth groups, create really cool give away bags for guests, call our people, pray for our church, deliver a meal for someone in need, meet, greet, and bless the broader church.  We need extroverts to greet, introverts to build relationships, prayer warriors, evangelists, and every age group and demographic represented here.

Leaders
Three Kairos participants will be selected as team leaders.  These individuals should be prepared to facilitate group discussions, and the scheduling and delegation of ministry tasks.

Term
Quarterly, we will open the teams to new applicants.  Some participants may switch teams at this time.

Discipleship and Relationships
Kairos will be a great way to meet people in the church, and it is our hope that our people will gather in the tradition of Acts 2:42, breaking bread together and investing time in each other outside of the structure of our meetings and services.  We will intentionally seek to facilitate the building of relationships.  We will also look at scripture together  as a team.

Small Accountability Groups PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nathan Phinney
Tuesday, 18 December 2007

South Hills Church Community strongly encourages all its members to participate in a Finish Line Group. We call these groups "Finish Line Groups" because we believe that those following Jesus today need the help and push of other believers to finish well. These groups consist of three men or three women who meet once a week for one hour for the following purpose:

To share together from their personal, daily time with God of what God has been teaching them and challenging them to do.

To answer specific accountability questions that each group determines as appropriate for them. Questions like: "Have you spent adequate time with your spouse and family this week?" "Have you been faithful in all your financial dealings this past week?" "Have you exposed yourself to any sexually explicit material this week?" "Have you just lied to us?"

To pray together for three other people that each person in the group is reaching out to and praying that they would discover faith in Jesus.

Each group is challenged to grow by dividing into other groups as they add new people to the group. See Pastor Chris for additional details or contact the church office at 616-6700.
