Kairos is creative. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nathan Phinney

Kairos is a team of creative leaders at South Hills Church Community.

What is Kairos?

Kairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word meaning the "right or opportune moment"; a time in which something special happens.

The Creative Programming Department led by Shaun and Nathan created Kairos as an opportunity for creative leaders to meet together in community; to align and implement creative vision in everything we do at South Hills.  Our weekend services are an opportunity for people to connect with the living God, and we exist first and foremost to make the process of connecting with God through Christ attractive and stimulating.

Although there has always been a worship roster and a creative roster of individuals who are able to serve, Kairos seeks to bring together a team of visionaries from within and outside those rosters to shape and guide vision in the way we apply creativity to ministry at South Hills.

Who Should Join?

In rhetoric kairos is "a passing instant when an opening appears which must be driven through with force if success is to be achieved."

We are actively recruiting musicians, artists, writers, graphic designers, developers, promoters, producers, directors, cinematographers, and creative thinkers to join the team.  It is not required that you be on a worship or creative roster, nor is it discouraged.

You can also add your information to our worship or creative roster without committing to Kairos.  Kairos is for individuals who want to shape the vision and focus of our creative and worship ministries.

If I Join, What Will We Do?

In the New Testament kairos means "the appointed time in the purpose of God", the time when God acts (e.g. Mark 1.15, the kairos is fulfilled).

Kairos includes two types of activities, which we call Studio and Tour

Studio
As a musician or artist, working in the studio is really where everything happens. It is where that new song that’s been rattling around in your head gets put on paper and ultimately turned into the song that changes the world. For a sculptor, the studio is a place where that block of clay becomes your masterpiece. Studio is our time to get together and create, plan, and implement our ideas. These times together will be very interactive so bring your creative mind and creative heart and be ready for something great.  A Studio session could include time spent working on the newsletter, previewing potential worship music, or both.

Tour
Artists tour.  It's a way to get your art or music seen and heard, but even more important, travel allows the creative mind to be inspired.  Recording artists confide that much of their music is written on the road because there is something that stirs up our creative senses as we experience new things away from the places we are the most comfortable. This is exactly what we are hoping to accomplish in what we are calling Tour.  We will be heading out around the greater Las Vegas area with the hope that God would inspire us as we seek after how He would have us present His gospel to His people.  A tour might be a nature hike, a photoessay, a visit to a museum, a cooking class, or a movie screening.  Touring helps us make the most of our time in the studio and brings us together in unity as a team of creative leaders.
